The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to SeedSigner: Build, Transact, and Master Stateless Bitcoin Security
When securing your Bitcoin, hardware wallets are often treated as the gold standard. However, traditional commercial signing devices can introduce real headaches: supply chain tampering risks, order database leaks that expose your home address, and hefty price tags.
Enter the SeedSigner: a completely open-source, DIY, stateless signing device built entirely with off-the-shelf components. Because it never writes your private keys permanently into memory, the device completely wipes everything the moment you pull the plug.
In this comprehensive guide, we will walk through every step: sourcing parts, assembling the device, flashing verified firmware, rolling dice for entropy, making physical SeedQRs, and executing zero-leak air-gapped transactions using Sparrow Wallet.
1. What Makes the SeedSigner Unique?
Unlike conventional commercial hardware wallets, SeedSigner relies on generic electronics you can pick up practically anywhere without ever tipping anyone off that you own Bitcoin:
Stateless Operation
The device never writes your seed phrase to onboard persistent storage. Once powered down, all session memory vanishes into thin air. A seized or stolen SeedSigner reveals zero sensitive data.
100% Air-Gapped Optical Communication
No USB data cables, no Bluetooth, and no Wi-Fi connectivity while signing transactions. Everything flows through dynamic QR codes captured by the onboard camera module.
Affordable and Privacy Preserving
Built from standard parts available at regular electronics retailers. You never have to hand over your name or delivery address to specialized crypto hardware manufacturers.
2. Parts List & Hardware Assembly
To assemble your own SeedSigner, you will need four primary components, plus an optional enclosure:
- Raspberry Pi Zero v1.3 or Zero W: Make sure male GPIO header pins are soldered on.
- Waveshare 1.3-inch LCD Hat: A 240x240 color screen equipped with an integrated joystick and navigation buttons.
- Raspberry Pi Camera Module: With a short, flexible flat ribbon cable.
- MicroSD Card: 8GB or larger is more than enough for the lightweight OS.
- Enclosure (Optional): A 3D-printed case, such as the popular Orange Pill case, provides protection and clean button tactile feedback.
Hardware Assembly Walkthrough
- Connect the Camera Ribbon: Gently lift the plastic retaining clip on the camera board, slide in the ribbon cable with the metal contacts facing the board, and press the clip down firmly to lock it into place.
- Mount Components in Enclosure: Seat the camera module neatly into the bottom cutout of your case, carefully fold the ribbon cable without pinching it, and fasten the Raspberry Pi onto the case standoffs using the provided screws.
- Attach the LCD Hat: Carefully align the GPIO header pins with the socket on the Waveshare LCD Hat and press straight down until it sits flush. Pop on your joystick cap and faceplate buttons.
3. Flashing the SeedSigner Software
Before powering on the unit, prepare the operating system on your MicroSD card:
- Download the Official Image: Go to the official SeedSigner GitHub repository and download the latest release image that matches your Raspberry Pi model (Pi0 or Pi0W).
- Verify Hashes and Signatures: Always verify the SHA-256 checksum or GPG release signature in PowerShell or your terminal. Verifying authenticity protects you from corrupted downloads or malicious software tampering.
- Flash to MicroSD: Open a trusted flashing tool like BalenaEtcher or Raspberry Pi Imager, select the verified image file, target your MicroSD card, and flash the drive.
- Insert and Power On: Eject the MicroSD card safely, slide it into the Raspberry Pi slot, and plug in a clean micro-USB power cable (from a power bank or wall adapter). In roughly 45 seconds, the SeedSigner logo and main menu will appear on screen.
4. Generating Keys & Creating a SeedQR
SeedSigner offers completely trust-minimized, offline ways to create your master private keys:
Image Entropy
Point the camera at any complex physical scene and snap a photo. The software extracts high-entropy cryptographic randomness directly from the raw pixel data.
Physical Dice Rolls
Roll ordinary casino or board game dice 50 or 99 times. Entering each roll gives you verifiable mathematical randomness that no external computer can manipulate.
Once your 12-word or 24-word seed phrase is generated:
- Carefully write down all your recovery words and note your unique master key fingerprint.
- Optional BIP39 Passphrase: Add an optional passphrase for an extra defensive layer against physical extortion or physical compromise.
- Transcribe a SeedQR: Because the SeedSigner is entirely stateless, it forgets your seed whenever power is disconnected. The device allows you to transcribe your words into a physical SeedQR grid (standard 25x25 or compact 21x21). You can fill in the dots on cardstock using a marker, or stamp them into stainless steel for an indestructible cold backup.
5. Air-Gapped Transacting with Sparrow Wallet
Step 1: Export Your Public Key (Xpub) to Sparrow
Connect your SeedSigner to Sparrow without ever exposing your private seed:
- On your SeedSigner, go to Seeds > Export Xpub > Single Sig > Native SegWit (Default).
- The screen will display an animated QR code containing your extended public key.
- Open Sparrow Wallet on your computer, select File > New Wallet, set the policy to Single Signature, click Airgapped / QR, select Scan, and present your SeedSigner screen to your computer webcam.
- Sparrow imports your xpub and generates your wallet addresses. Click Apply and set an optional wallet lock password.
Step 2: Fund Your Wallet and Sign a Test Transaction
- Receive Sats: Head to the Receive tab in Sparrow and send a small test deposit (such as 10,000 sats) to verify address generation.
- Construct Send Transaction: In Sparrow's Send tab, enter a destination address and sat amount. Click Create Transaction, then Finalize Transaction for Signing.
- Display PSBT QR: In Sparrow, click Show QR. Sparrow displays the Partially Signed Bitcoin Transaction as an animated QR stream.
- Scan & Authorize: On your SeedSigner, choose Scan, aim the lens at your laptop monitor to read the PSBT, and verify the recipient address, payment total, and miner fees on the built-in screen. Click Confirm & Sign.
- Broadcast: Hold up your SeedSigner screen displaying the signed PSBT QR stream back toward your computer webcam. Sparrow reads the signature instantly. Click Broadcast Transaction to push it out to the Bitcoin network.
