How to Buy & Sell Bitcoin Privately Using RoboSats (Step-by-Step Guide)
With data breaches and exchange hacks on the rise, handing over your sensitive personal information to centralized KYC (Know Your Customer) exchanges is becoming an unnecessary security risk. When private databases get leaked, bad actors can link your real identity, home address, and financial activity directly to your Bitcoin stack.
Bitcoin was designed from the beginning as peer-to-peer electronic cash. In this guide, we will walk through how you can buy and sell Bitcoin privately without ID verification using RoboSats and the Lightning Network, keeping your financial life secure and sovereign.
What is RoboSats?
RoboSats is an open-source, peer-to-peer exchange platform that runs over the Tor network and leverages the Lightning Network for fast, low-cost escrow settlement without personal identification.
Why Use RoboSats?
- No KYC: No personal details, identity documents, or account setups tied to your legal name.
- Pseudonymous Identities: Every trade uses a randomly generated "Robot" profile token that keeps each order completely independent.
- Fidelity Bonds: Both buyer and seller lock a small Lightning bond into an escrow hold-invoice to deter fraud and ensure smooth trades.
- Coordinators for Dispute Resolution: Independent coordinators facilitate trades and handle mediation if an issue arises.
Prerequisites: Getting Set Up
To trade on RoboSats, you need access to the Tor network and a Lightning-capable wallet:
1. Accessing RoboSats
You can access RoboSats using either of the following approaches:
- Node Apps: Install RoboSats directly via the app store on your sovereign node (such as Umbrel or Start9).
- Tor Browser or Brave: Navigate to learn.robosats.org and open the
.onionlink inside the Tor Browser or a Brave Private Window with Tor enabled.
2. Lightning Wallet (CoinOS)
Use an account like CoinOS (coinos.io), which allows quick swaps between on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning without identity verification.
Step 1: Generate Your Robot Token
When you first enter RoboSats, click Start to generate your unique Robot Token.
- Back up this token securely: If you use Tor Browser or clear your session cache, this token is the only key to restore your profile and active trades.
- Robot Pseudonym: Once generated, RoboSats will assign you a pseudonym (such as EnthusiasticRobot).
Step 2: Buying Bitcoin on RoboSats
- Browse or Create an Offer: Navigate to the Offers tab, choose your fiat currency (such as USD, CAD, or EUR), and select your preferred payment method (such as Strike, Interac e-Transfer, or Cash App).
- Lock Your Buyer Bond: Select an offer and review the coordinator's reputation and fees. RoboSats will display a small Lightning invoice for your fidelity bond. Pay this invoice using your Lightning wallet.
-
Submit Payout Invoice: Generate a Lightning invoice for the purchase amount in your wallet and paste it into RoboSats.
Tip: If routing issues occur, toggle the advanced settings to slightly increase the routing fee budget.
- Send Fiat Payment: Once the seller locks their collateral, enter the encrypted peer chat, request the seller's payment details, and transfer the fiat payment directly.
- Receive Sats: Once the seller confirms payment receipt, the satoshis are pushed instantly to your Lightning invoice, and your security bond is returned.
Step 3: Selling Bitcoin on RoboSats
- Create an Offer: Head to Create, specify the fiat amount, select your payment method, and set your premium over market rate (for example, +1% to +5%).
- Lock Maker Bond: Lock the required fidelity bond via a Lightning invoice.
- Wait for a Taker: Once a buyer accepts, you have a set window to lock the Bitcoin amount being sold into the escrow hold-invoice.
- Confirm Fiat: Share your payment handle in the encrypted chat. Once the fiat lands safely in your bank account or fiat app, mark the trade as confirmed to release the satoshis to the buyer.
- Reclaim Bond: Your original fidelity bond returns automatically to your wallet.
Moving to Cold Storage (Self-Custody)
Once your non-KYC satoshis arrive in your Lightning wallet, do not leave them there:
- In your transit wallet (such as CoinOS), select Send.
- Paste an address generated from your hardware wallet or cold storage device.
- Swap your Lightning balance back to on-chain Bitcoin.
