How to Connect Your Lightning Wallet to Nostr Using CoinOS

Want to zap people on Nostr but don't have a Lightning wallet yet? This step-by-step guide shows you how to set up CoinOS and connect it to Nostr in minutes, so you can start sending and receiving Bitcoin tips on the decentralized social network.

One of the best features of Nostr is the ability to "zap" people—send small Lightning payments to show appreciation for their posts. But if you're new to Bitcoin or Lightning, setting up a wallet can seem daunting.

The good news? You can use CoinOS to create a Lightning wallet instantly and connect it to Nostr, even if you've never used Lightning before. Here's exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Create Your CoinOS Account

First, we need to set up a CoinOS wallet. This web-based wallet makes Lightning incredibly simple.

  1. Go to coinos.io and click Register
  2. Enter your desired username
  3. Create a password (or use the random generator)
  4. Select an avatar/icon
  5. Click Register

That's it. No email required, no waiting period. You now have a Lightning wallet ready to go.

Step 2: Get Your Nostr Wallet Connect Information

Now we need to get the connection information that will link CoinOS to your Nostr client.

  1. In CoinOS, click the hamburger menu (☰) in the top left
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Click on Nostr
  4. You'll see two options:
    • Nostr Connect (alternative method)
    • Nostr Wallet Connect (what we'll use)
  5. Copy your Nostr Wallet Connect information

This connection string is what will link your CoinOS wallet to Nostr. Keep it handy for the next step.

Step 3: Connect to Your Nostr Client

This guide uses Primal as an example, but the process is similar for other Nostr clients like Amethyst, Damus, or any client that supports Nostr Wallet Connect.

For Primal (Desktop or Mobile):

  1. Make sure you're signed into your Nostr account (or create one if you haven't)
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Navigate to Connected Wallets
  4. Click on Nostr Wallet Connect
  5. Click Connect
  6. Enter a name for your wallet (e.g., "CoinOS BNC Wallet")
  7. Paste the Wallet Connect information you copied from CoinOS
  8. Click Connect

If it doesn't work the first time, just try again with the same procedure. Sometimes it takes a moment to establish the connection.

Note: The exact menu location may vary slightly between clients. Look for "Settings" → "Wallet" or "Connected Wallets" in your Nostr client of choice.

Step 4: Add Your Lightning Address to Your Nostr Profile

To receive zaps on Nostr, you need to add your Lightning address to your profile. This allows people to send you Bitcoin when they like your posts.

  1. In CoinOS, go to the homepage
  2. Click the hamburger menu (☰)
  3. Click Edit
  4. You'll see your Lightning address in the format: yourusername@coinos.io
  5. Copy this Lightning address
  6. Go back to your Nostr client (Primal, Amethyst, etc.)
  7. Go to your Profile (usually bottom left or in the menu)
  8. Click Edit Profile
  9. Find the Bitcoin Lightning Address field
  10. Paste your CoinOS Lightning address
  11. Click Save

Now you can both receive zaps (through your Lightning address) and send zaps (through your connected wallet). Perfect!

Step 5: Fund Your Wallet

Before you can zap people, you need some Bitcoin in your CoinOS wallet. Here are your options:

  1. In CoinOS, click Receive
  2. You can receive:
    • Lightning Bitcoin (directly to your Lightning address)
    • Onchain Bitcoin (will be automatically converted when you send Lightning)
    • Liquid Bitcoin
    • Ecash

Important note: If you send onchain Bitcoin to CoinOS, you can still send it via Lightning, but there may be small behind-the-scenes swapping fees or platform fees. For the best experience, try to receive Lightning Bitcoin directly or swap between Bitcoin and Lightning within CoinOS.

For example, you could send yourself 1,000 sats from another Lightning wallet, or buy Bitcoin directly through CoinOS. Once funded, you're ready to start zapping!

Step 6: Start Zapping on Nostr

Now for the fun part—actually using Lightning on Nostr!

  1. Browse Nostr using the Explorer tab (great on both desktop and mobile)
  2. Check out Trending posts or follow people you're interested in
  3. When you see a post you like, click the zap button (usually a lightning bolt ⚡)
  4. Choose your zap amount (more on this below)
  5. Confirm the zap

You can verify your zaps worked by going back to CoinOS and clicking the History button. You'll see your outgoing zaps listed there with the amounts deducted from your balance.

Customizing Your Zap Settings

You can customize how much you want to zap by default. In Primal:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click on Zaps
  3. Set your custom default amount

Many people set their default to just 1 sat. Why? Because it's like a "like" button, but with real Bitcoin value behind it. You can zap freely without worrying about spending too much, and it still shows real appreciation.

Of course, you can always zap more for posts you really love. It's completely up to you. The beauty of Lightning is that you can send any amount, from 1 sat to thousands of sats.

Receiving Zaps on Your Posts

Once you've added your Lightning address to your Nostr profile, people can zap you when they like your posts. You'll see the zap amounts displayed on your posts, and the Bitcoin will automatically arrive in your CoinOS wallet.

The more you post quality content, the more zaps you'll receive. And the more zaps you receive, the more you can zap others. It creates a positive feedback loop where good content is rewarded with Bitcoin.

For example, you might post something and receive 21 sats, 130 sats, or even more depending on how much people value your content. Those sats add up and make it easy to zap others in return.

Why This Setup Works So Well

CoinOS + Nostr is a powerful combination because:

  • No KYC required - Create your wallet instantly
  • Easy to use - No technical knowledge needed
  • Works everywhere - CoinOS works with any Nostr client that supports Wallet Connect
  • Instant payments - Lightning is fast and cheap
  • Real value - Every zap is actual Bitcoin, not just a "like"

Important Reminders

Remember:

  • CoinOS is a custodial wallet—they hold your keys
  • Only keep small amounts in CoinOS for spending/zapping
  • For larger amounts, withdraw to cold storage (hardware wallet)
  • Regularly check your balance and transaction history

Troubleshooting Tips

If you run into issues:

  • Connection not working? Try disconnecting and reconnecting the wallet in your Nostr client
  • Can't find the settings? Different Nostr clients have slightly different menus—look for "Wallet" or "Connected Wallets" in settings
  • Zaps not going through? Make sure you have enough balance in CoinOS and that your wallet is properly connected
  • Not receiving zaps? Double-check that your Lightning address is correctly added to your Nostr profile

Conclusion

That's it! You now know how to connect CoinOS to Nostr and start zapping. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and once it's set up, you can start sending and receiving Bitcoin tips on the decentralized social network.

The combination of CoinOS's simplicity and Nostr's decentralized nature creates a powerful way to monetize content and show appreciation with real Bitcoin value. Whether you're zapping 1 sat or 1,000 sats, every zap matters and helps support the creators you love.
